We use modern machinery to cut quarry blocks to specific dimensions for further operations. This reduces the labor involved in the “roughing out” process, and enables us to hand-carve stone details with traditional methods.

The adjacent photos show some of our equipment in use. The machines, listed below, help us produce items such as columns, cornices, and moldings.

  • Lathe: The Niles Bement can accommodate stones up to 5 feet in diameter of limited length. We can turn smaller diameter units up to 16 feet long.

  • Planers: The Niles Bement can profile and mill pieces up to 4 ft x 4 ft x 16 ft long. The Cincinnati has a 3 ft x 3 ft x 8 ft capacity and is primarily used for moldings and line finishes.

  • Saws and Hand Tools: The wire-saw is used to cut large blocks to size for the lathe, planers, and cut-off saw. Further refinement is carried out using hand and pneumatic carving tools.
